Beginning slow and being consistent is essential; cycling offers the unique ability to gradually build up both strength and endurance without requiring too much effort. This makes it an ideal activity for recovery after an illness, allowing you to regain your fitness at a comfortable pace.

True, not everyone feels entirely comfortable cycling on roads that are shared with various other traffic sources, but fortunately, there are appealing alternatives. For instance, you might explore gravel-packed roads in the serene countryside, where you can find peaceful routes off the beaten track that are mostly free of traffic, except for the occasional pedestrian casually walking their dogs. Additionally, you can enjoy the lovely tranquillity of a scenic canal path, providing a wonderfully quiet environment for your ride. And let’s not forget about the option of indoor cycling, which allows you to stay active in the warm comfort of your home when the weather outside is absolutely dreadful or when the wind is stubbornly trying to blow you in the opposite direction.

However, for us, Zwift serves as a valuable recovery method that can truly aid in our journey and motivate us to reach our fitness goals, helping us become fit, strong, and healthy in the process.

Now for the old-school cyclists who often claim that using indoor training cycling apps isn’t really cycling at all, I have a different perspective to share. If you truly want to get fit and strong, you don’t need to be out on the road facing all sorts of weather conditions. However, to them, I say good luck dealing with the freezing cold or the wet and windy conditions that can make cycling quite uncomfortable. Personally, I would much prefer the cozy comfort of my home, where I can train on my indoor cycling app. I find that I can get just as much out of my training sessions as they do, but without having to battle the elements, all while enjoying a controlled temperature in the comfort of my house or shed, depending on where I have my setup. For me, as a survivor, this flexibility in my training routine holds significant weight and meaning.

Zwift played a massive part in my recovery journey because it provides a fully controlled environment and pace-controlled experience. There is virtually nothing that you don’t have control over in Zwift; it is truly all up to you and your own efforts. The platform offers a variety of set training sessions just waiting to be completed, and the game will effortlessly guide you through each session. All you really have to do is put in the effort of cycling on your indoor bike and trainer according to the specific needs of the predetermined session. Alternatively, you might choose to simply pick a scenic route and free ride alongside thousands of other live avatars from around the globe, making the experience feel even more engaging and connected.

The reason I absolutely love Zwift is that it offers such a well-structured experience while still being completely free for me to choose what I want to do and how hard I wish to push myself. It's all about the variety of choices available, allowing me to tailor each workout to fit my personal goals and energy levels.

I do a lot of cycling outdoors and also enjoy using Zwift, which is a fantastic platform for indoor training. I find myself increasingly engaged in more structured sessions and racing opportunities on Zwift, while I reserve my outdoor rides for those longer, steady-paced outings. I especially love testing myself on the steeper gradients of the stunning Scottish landscape. Unfortunately, up here in Scotland, the weather is often quite unpredictable. It usually comes in the form of horizontal rain, gale force winds, snow and ice, or is simply just incredibly cold. It’s very rare that we get a delightful, good old-fashioned sunny day with a gentle breeze, but when we do, we certainly make the most of it and savor every moment.

After my challenging bout with sepsis, I’ve found it increasingly difficult to motivate myself to get out and face the often unpredictable and sometimes harsh Scottish weather. Thank goodness for Zwift! I genuinely have a lot to be grateful for when it comes to this incredible platform. I encourage you to give it a try, Just remember to stick with it because, in the long run, it will offer you more rewards and benefits than what you initially put in.
