Setbacks
The reality of life will always present us with various setbacks in some form or another, whether they be health-related, financial challenges, or other obstacles we have to face. These hurdles are simply a part and parcel of the never-ending quest we all undertake to succeed in life. Yet, time and again, we find ourselves falling into the trap of chasing a notion of succession that leads us to who knows where. Most of us, unfortunately, fail to realize that true success comes in many diverse forms and is not necessarily defined by wealth and social status, but rather by the priceless treasure of good health.
So you have bravely survived and successfully recovered from sepsis as well as you possibly could, and everything seems to be going well. Like me, you may begin to feel that this moment marks a significant tipping point in your journey toward better health. Then, just when you least expect it, you find yourself catching some kind of cold, flu, or COVID variant—who knows what it could be these days! I often think that if you happen to come down with a simple common cold in the current climate, you are truly fortunate. It feels as if the little old common cold has nearly vanished, overshadowed by all the new types of flu and various COVID variants swirling around us.
And it’s always a worry how my body is going to react in this situation. Will I get through this okay, or is this going to lead to yet another trip to the hospital? and more significant punishment to my already damaged lungs unfortunately, some of us survivors don’t have the luxury of thinking it will be just fine, especially given the unpredictability of our health conditions. Depending on your personal circumstances, it very well might mean a trip back to the hospital, or it might not, and this uncertainty can stir up all sorts of fear and anxiety in your mind if you let it.
But we can significantly minimise the chances of this situation arising if we take proactive steps to look after ourselves throughout the recovery process. By doing so, we can build up that all-important fitness bank account that I often talk about. This way, when we find ourselves in need of support to help our body effectively fight and recover from illness, that account is fully prepared and ready to make a vital payment. It’s worth noting that this fitness bank account is not a one-time effort; rather, it is a continuous journey that requires ongoing attention. We must consistently top it up and maintain it to the fullest extent possible, allowing us the reassurance and peace of mind that comes from knowing we have laid a solid foundation for our health in the face of future challenges.
Dealing with setbacks can be quite difficult and incredibly frustrating at times, but I have found that utilizing the 7-step plan below really helps me navigate through the inevitable setbacks much more effectively than trying to go it alone without any plan. Following a structured process and committing to it alleviates much of the fear associated with the unknown, allowing me to have a clearer understanding of what to expect. With a well-thought-out plan and an organized process in place, I can somewhat predict the outcome, which definitely makes the journey less stressful and helps me remain more focused and structured as I work towards recovery.
At the end of the day, effectively managing your fitness bank account requires having a well-thought-out plan and a reliable process in place to tackle any setbacks that may come your way. Taking these proactive steps will not only alleviate the stress that often accompanies the unknown but will also equip you with a solid and strong foundation to confidently move forward in your fitness journey.
